The section displayed here shows him playing the zither, while other unrolled sections show him meeting friends, walking alone, or refusing a gift of meat. Yet other scenes portray him looking for a place to sleep off a bout of drunkenness, drinking with his companions, or wearing the cloth cap that he used to strain wine. In terms of technique, the scroll is executed in the “uncolored outline” ( pai-miao ) method, a method in which Li was reportedly quite proficient. He also was fond of adopting T’ao Yüan-ming as his subject. Yet even though this painting is attributed to Li Kung-lin, the quality of its execution indicates that it is not from the hand of this famous artist. Li」Kung-lin (whose style-name was Po-shih and sobriquet, Recluse of Dragon’s Sleep Mountain) was a native of Shu-chou (present-day Shu-ch’eng, Anhwei). He received the Presented Scholar degree in the Hsi-ning era (1068-1077), and he later achieved the rank of Reviser in the Secretariat-Chancellery. In 1100 he retired from office because of his arthritis and returned to spend the remainder of his life on Dragon’s Sleep Mountain. He was famous for his paintings of landscapes, figures, and horses.
